How to Prepare for Your Media Day with FSP Sports
There are many things that can make or break a great media day. While technology allows photographers to do extensive editing and adjustments, that is not our goal. We want you to look your absolute best the day of, so as to reduce the amount of retouching and time spent on your images.
HAIR
So let’s dive right in! We will start with hair:
1. Making sure your hair is washed and clean for your media day is essential. If frizzy hair is a concern, try your favorite anti-frizz product just before your shoot. If oily hair is a concern, try using dry shampoo.
2. Choose a hairstyle that will keep your hair off your cheekbones and out of your eyes. This is to avoid shadows across the face from the studio lighting. Those with longer hair can try wearing it down in loose waves or a straight, sleek look. Shorter hair should be neatly styled. Those with curly or textured hair should embrace their natural look, just remember to keep those curls frizz-free!
3. Run a brush, comb,or your fingers through your hair before going up for your photo.
Our photographers do their best to ensure hair looks great, but we are limited in what we can do. The rest is up to you. 🙂
MAKEUP & FACE
The next important topic is your face! Should you decide to wear makeup to your Media Day session, here are some great tips to keep in mind:
1. You've heard less is more - and that absolutely applies here! Go for as natural a look as possible. Think subtle and polished. Light gloss & lipstick won't compete with the focus of the image - your face!
2. Try to avoid shimmery eyeshadows & glitter sprays. They look great to the naked eye, but put a flash on them, and you're bound to appear shiny & sweaty in all the wrong places. This applies to some foundations too, including mineral makeup.
3. Use oil-blotting tissues just before your turn in front of the camera to carefully blot up any excess oil on your face. We also keep these on hand at each session just in case. ;)
ENVIRONMENT
The environment plays a huge part in your photos as well! We always prefer to shoot our Media Day sessions indoors. This can be in a school gym, cafeteria, portable, or even a batting cage. This is crucial so we aren't dealing with environmental issues such as wind, sun, rain, etc.
Wherever you decide, the most important thing is making sure the air temperature is comfortable. Too hot, and the players may look shiny in their photos from moisture on their face. Too cold, and they could end up with rosy cheeks & noses.
We always bring a bluetooth speaker and let the players select a DJ, however, the music must be clean & appropriate, or we'll take over with our own music. ;)
CLOTHING
Your appearance says alot about you! Ensure your uniform is free from wrinkles, rips, & tears, and is as clean and stain-free as you can get it. (Softball dirt is hard, we know!) This presents a put-together athlete that means business. Try to get everything together the night before your shoot.
Make sure your buttons are buttoned, your belt is straight, and your shirt is tucked in neatly (unless the uniform requires untucked shirts). Any drawstrings on your shorts should be tucked in as well. We will also try our best to catch anything that goes undetected. :)
